Over 50s travel review site’s top tips for home grown cosmetics and medicines
As airports continue to `confiscate’ millions of pounds worth of cosmetics and toiletries each year, over 50s travel review and advice site Silver Travel Advisor urges travellers to ease the pressure on security airport security (and themselves) by buying natural or organic ingredients for cosmetics, toiletries and holiday ailments from the local supermarket or farm shop on arrival on holiday.
Silver Travel Advisor’s Debbie Marshall (pictured) said “in the height of the summer holiday season UK airport confiscate up to £11.5 million worth of toiletries and cosmetics each week*. The average value of items confiscated being £23, with one in five Britons having lost toiletries and liquids since the ban was introduced in 2006.”
Silver Travel Advisor suggests travellers should leave liquid toiletries at home and take a trip to the local restaurant or supermarket on arrival and make use of healing properties of natural products such as tomatoes, avocadoes, garlic, honey, lemon and onions.
Debbie Marshall said “A holiday is also a good time to try new things while away from the office, friends and family and it may well be that travellers stick to what’s natural on their return home too.”

Silver Travel Advisor member, pharmacist Dave Harcombe, said “It’s well worth knowing some of the healing properties of common foods when travelling. Conventional medicines aren’t always available, pharmacies may be closed when you need them, labels may be written in an unfamiliar language, prescriptive quantities can be ambiguous and quite often nature has a ready, freely available remedy that will bridge the gap until more conventional aid can be found”.
