Family coordinator named Leicester’s ‘Local Hero’ by Company Shop

Redistribution superstore Company Shop has chosen Helen Washington as Leicester’s ‘Local Hero’ for helping ordinary people deal with the challenges of family life in her role as a Family Coordinator for Home Start Horizons.

The UK’s largest redistributor of surplus food and products, Company Shop Group, which operates a store on Leicester Distribution Park, recently launched the national campaign which encouraged store members and local people to nominate themselves, loved ones, colleagues, and members of the community as their region’s Local Hero.

Home Start Horizons is a local community network of trained volunteers and staff providing expert practical and confidential support to families with children under the age of five. As a family coordinator, Helen’s challenging role sees her working with families across the city, recruiting and training a team of volunteers and running regular support groups.

Helen’s hard work has been rewarded by Company Shop with a £100 voucher to spend in store. Given Company Shop’s unique surplus redistribution model, Helen and other national winners will be able to access high-quality food and products at deeply discounted prices.

Helen said: “I feel really honoured to have been recognised as a Local Hero by Company Shop, but I also want to say our work wouldn’t be possible without our incredible team of volunteers who offer friendship, support, and practical help to families to help them build a resilience to the ups and downs of family life.”

Company Shop Leicester Store Manager, Ben Hughes, said: “Our Local Heroes campaign celebrates our incredible frontline workers and the lengths they go to make a difference every day in our community. Helen Washington’s story is a fitting testament to this, and we’re delighted to be able to recognise everything she’s done to help families in our region.”

Throughout the pandemic, Company Shop Group leveraged its national scale and close industry and local partnerships to ensure families had access to essential food and products. Its latest Local Hero initiative is just one of the many ways that the store locally, and the Group nationally, fulfils its ongoing commitment to giving back to the community and supporting those most in need.

Company Shop Membership is open to those working in the NHS, care services, emergency services, FMCG supply chain, the British Armed Forces, prison services, and employees and volunteers from registered charities.

It is also open to those in receipt of means tested benefits, including families receiving Free School Meals (FSM). Anyone who is eligible for membership can sign up for free membership online.
