Stay Safe on Darker Days

As autumn brings shorter days, earlier sunsets and wetter weather, it’s a good time for families to take extra care when travelling to and from school. The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October this year, meaning it will get dark noticeably earlier in the afternoons.

Children walking or cycling should be encouraged to stay alert around roads, use crossings where available and make sure they can be seen by drivers.

Bright or reflective clothing and accessories can help improve visibility, especially when it’s dark or gloomy outside.

For children who cycle or use scooters, wearing a properly fitted helmet is important, while bike lights and reflectors can make them easier to spot. Parents can also check that bikes and scooters are in good working order, with brakes, tyres and lights working properly.

A few simple precautions can help children stay safe, seen and confident as the seasons change.
