Children celebrate NSPCC’s Number Day with celebrities across the country

Celebrities made special appearances at schools across the UK, encouraging children to take part in maths games and activities to fundraise for the NSPCC’s Number Day.

The annual event, which is now in its 26th year, highlights the fun side of mathematics through engaging activities like ‘Dress up for Digits’, all while raising vital funds to support the charity’s nationwide services.

Johnny Ball visited Cippenham School in Berkshire, inspiring children with interactive sessions on the joy of mathematics, includ zng an assembly that looked at the history of maths.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Asuquo led an assembly at Glade Primary School in Essex, demonstrating how early maths skills lay the foundation for financial literacy later in life. The children, some as young as Reception age, were engaged and interested in learning more about money.

Great British Bake Off 2023 finalist, Dr Josh Smalley, paid a visit to Overdale Junior School in Leicester, where he wowed students with an interactive presentation on the science behind cakes and the pH scale. Showcasing his baking expertise, he also delighted the children with delightful, number-shaped biscuits.

Johnny Ball, proud supporter of NSPCC’s Number Day, said:I’m delighted to support the NSPCC’s annual Number Day once again. It’s a fantastic initiative that helps children see maths in a new light—making it fun, accessible, and something that they can enjoy from an early age.

“Maths can feel daunting for many, so it’s vital we show that it’s not just about numbers; it underpins so much of life, from the arts to the sciences.

“Number Day also brings schools together in a brilliant way, encouraging pupils to fundraise for the NSPCC’s essential work that supports children across the UK. I’m proud to play a part in such an important cause.”

With more than 80 per cent of the NSPCC’s income coming from supporters—including schools—events like Number Day play a crucial role in ensuring the charity can continue to provide its vital services, such as Childline.

Stephanie Coleman, senior fundraiser at the NSPCC, said: “Number Day is such a special day in the annual calendar for schools. It brings pupils and staff together to celebrate the fun of maths and the importance of keeping children safe from harm.

“It’s wonderful to see how children celebrate this event across the country, we’ve heard of children dressed as calculators, dice and sporting their favourite numbers on sports tops.

“Every pound raised through Number Day helps fund our vital work supporting children across the UK who have experienced abuse. It’s amazing to see so many schools take part year after year, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who gets involved.”

Schools can get sign up to Number Day by registering online. The NSPCC will then send through all the resources needed to ensure every school’s Number Day is a success.
