NHS tips on keeping kids well over winter

Eating healthy, nutritious food, wearing warm clothing, heating your home, getting vaccinated against flu and washing hands regularly to stop viruses and germs spreading will all help your child to avoid getting sick this winter. Be sure to have sick-care essentials at home in case your child becomes ill. The NHS recommends a thermometer, plasters, child-friendly paracetamol, antiseptic cream, ice-packs and antihistamine.

If you need advice for ailments that don’t improve with self-care, including colds, earache and diarrhoea, speak to your local pharmacist or check the NHS app or website. If your child’s symptoms don’t improve or are more serious, contact your GP or NHS 111. They’ll book the right appointment for you.

Always go straight to your nearest emergency department or call 999 if it is a life or limb-threatening emergency.
