Supporting you to make decisions for the health of your family
Flu can be very unpleasant, especially for children. It can lead to serious complications like pneumonia and in some cases, admission to hospital or intensive care.
That’s why every year, children aged 2 to 16 are offered the nasal flu vaccine. It is quick and painless. If you do not want your child to have the nasal spray vaccine, ask for the flu vaccine injection on the school consent form.
Children aged 2 to 3 years can get the flu vaccine at their GP surgery. School-aged children (Reception to Year 11) should receive an invitation from their school.
Some children may get a mild fever or muscle aches for a day or two. These are signs that their immune system is building protection against flu itself. Its side effects are far less dangerous than the potential complications of getting the flu.
If you have any concerns or questions about vaccines, speak to a healthcare professional such as your GP, nurse or pharmacist. They can provide clear, evidence-based information.
