Premier League release new education resources for Safer Internet Day
To mark Safer Internet Day (Tuesday 6 February) the Premier League has launched a new suite of Premier League Primary Stars education resources designed to support children to stay safe online.
The new Online Content and Me resources have been designed to encourage children aged 7-11 to explore how online content affects behaviour, how to think critically about who creates online content, and why, and who to talk to when they are unsure of what they have seen online.
Supported by the UK Safer Internet Centre and Childnet, and created in consultation with primary school teachers, the free resources, which include fictional football-based online scenarios alongside worksheets and online activities, are available to every primary school in England and Wales.
Pupils are encouraged to identify ways in which the online content they enjoy may be a positive, negative or neutral influence and how to respond, including seeking help and support from a trusted adult if they are unsure about what they have seen.
Ruth Shaw, Premier League Charitable Fund Chief Executive, said: “The new Premier League Primary Stars Online Content and Me activities provide teachers with full lesson plans and interactive content to empower pupils to think critically about online content and consider the range of emotions that posting content online can produce.
“The resources have been designed to stimulate discussion in the classroom and at home on internet safety and complement the Premier League Primary Stars suite of more than 650 free education resources that use the appeal of football to help children learn, be active and develop essential life skills.”
Launched in 2017, Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs tosupport pupils in the classroom, the playground and on the sports field.
Developed by teachers for teachers, and in collaboration with experts such as the National Literacy Trust and the PSHE Association, Premier League Primary Stars resources support a range of curriculum subjects at Key Stage 1 (age 5-7) and Key Stage 2 (age 7-11). More than 68,000 teachers have registered online to access the free national curriculum-linked content.
Currently 104 professional football club community organisations from across the leagues receive Premier League funding to deliver Premier League Primary Stars sessions within local schools. The Premier League has invested more than £61 million into Premier League Primary Stars, through the Premier League Charitable Fund, to date.
