Family fun at festivals

Primary Times look at how you can enjoy a festival with your family in tow…

In recent years, there has been a greater demand for a place for families at festivals. Now, many family festivals exist across the country, with the larger festivals also incorporating areas for children or family camping sites. Parents no longer need to choose between trying to arrange childcare or avoiding festivals completely! Visiting with your family is a fantastic way to introduce children to the joys of camping, spending time outdoors, to music and entertainment, and to the sense of freedom and community present at a festival.

To enjoy yourselves with as little stress as possible, make sure you’re prepared for all weathers with wellies and waterproofs as well as sun cream, hats and sunglasses. A first aid kit and a picnic blanket to sit on are essential, as well as baby wipes aplenty, ear defenders for little ones, and your favourite snacks to keep you energised when queues for food are especially long! Be sure to form a plan for if you get separated or split up in a crowd; pick out a prominent building or flag as a meeting point, or write your phone numbers on children’s arms and their clothing labels if you can, just in case.

Top tips for a feel-good family experience:

- Do your research to find the best festival for your family’s interests and needs

- Camp in designated family areas with likeminded people and other parents

- Familiarise yourself with the festival map and lineup with your children to pick specific events or areas to visit together

- Enjoy wearing fancy dress, glitter, face or body paint, or glow in the dark attire at a festival, anything goes!

- Relax and spend time doing things you all like

- Bring the festival spirit home with you! If your child enjoyed certain music or arts activities for example, try to incorporate these to make daily life more fun.

Lastly, be sure to make wonderful memories!
