BBC CHILDREN IN NEED INVITES PRIMARY SCHOOLS ACROSS THE UK TO MAKE HISTORY AND TAKE PART IN THE ROYALLY BIG PORTRAIT AHEAD OF KING CHARLES III CORONATION

Led by artist Sam Barnett, primary school pupils across the nation are being asked to get creative and draw their own portrait of His Majesty, with the drawings being used to create one giant digital portrait of the King

BBC Children in Need launches The Royally Big Portrait across primary schools in the UK. Pupils are encouraged to be a part of this moment in history and celebrate the King’s historic coronation, by joining artist Sam Barnett and drawing their own portrait of King Charles III. Pupils’ individual drawings will be combined to create one giant digital portrait of the King that will be on public display online and in spots around London.

Primary school teachers can access a downloadable lesson pack on the BBC Children in Need website which contains an interactive art lesson led by artist Sam Barnett. Pupils can learn to draw King Charles III, and join thousands of other children across the UK, by submitting their artwork to create one big digital portrait of the newly crowned King. The pack will also include educational resources about the history of thecoronation ceremony and what it involves. In addition once the final digital portrait is complete, parents will receive their very own digital art piece, that allows them to see their child’s individual portrait and the part they have played in creating one glorious portrait of King Charles III to mark the coronation.

BBC Children in Need, Chief Executive, Simon Antrobus, said: “As part of the coronation, we’re encouraging primary school pupils across the UK to come together to create their own collective digital portrait of King Charles III. The coronation will be a moment in our nation’s history and culture, and all of us at BBC Children in Need want to mark the occasion by encouraging children across the UK to join in and be a part of it too. I can’t wait to see the final digital portrait.”

A printed version of the portrait will be available to purchase with the proceeds of each sale going towards supporting children and young people facing challenges with food insecurity. In the last year, BBC Children in Need has supported more than 27,000 children and young people, at 160 projects who are specifically experiencing food insecurity. Funding from BBC Children in Need enables grassroots projects to provide a space where young people can learn new skills like cooking and the benefits of food nutrition, which helps improve their physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

Primary schools across the UK can take part by visiting the BBC Children in Need website, where they can find all the information on The Royally Big Portrait, including how to get involved and an interactive art lesson with artist Sam Barnett: https://www.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk/schools/primary-school/bbc-children-in-needs-royally-big-portrait
