Getting children ‘Sun-Sorted’ this summer
Ensuring children are sun protected when attending sports or outdoor activity sessions can be tricky, however with just one blistering sunburn doubling the chances of melanoma in later life, it is crucial. To make this task easier, in 2014 the Melanoma Fund launched the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, a free resource for everyone who works outdoors with children.
Written by leading medical experts and endorsed by sports leaders, the campaign is partnered with the Association for Physical Education (afPE), Child Protection in Sport Unit (NSPCC), UK Coaching and the Youth Sport Trust, and is today supported by hundreds of national governing bodies of sport, and outdoor organisations.
New accreditation launch
The campaign has been updated for 2021 with a new and simplified accreditation scheme, open to both individuals and groups. Involvement requires 4 simple actions and will be supported by a toolkit of free, downloadable resources to help ensure sun protection is consistent and effective within all summer sessions.
Sun-Sorted!
To get children engaged, the charity is launching Sun-Sorted! - a fun but educational quiz, helping KS2 children discover why sun protection is important. Filled with interesting and amazing facts about the sun, their skin, and their environment, it will help them develop healthy habits that they can take into their teens and into adulthood.
THE BIG giveaway
To incentivise involvement, the Melanoma Fund will be giving away 150 free sun protection kits to sport and outdoor activity organisations, each containing a SunSense SPF50 sunscreen and an eco-friendly, Sun-Sorted wristband for 33 children.
Kits can be distributed either to encourage completion, or as prizes for those scoring specific grades. Groups and clubs will then be asked to raise awareness of their activity on their website and socials to keep the conversation going using #SunSorted21
