Barnardo’s 150th Christmas Carol Concert at Westminster Cathedral

Britain’s leading children’s charity is inviting the public to spread some Christmas cheer and help mark its 150th anniversary at a special carol concert at Westminster Cathedral.

Children and families are welcomed to take part in the ticketed evening event on 1 December at 7.15pm to reflect on the vital work of the charity’s founder, Thomas Barnardo, and how we can support even more disadvantaged children in the future.

Family favourites including Hark the Herald and Once in Royal David’s City will be among the carols sung, along with Christmas readings by Barnardo’s supporter, actor Robert Daws and a beneficiary from Barnardo’s services.

The congregation will also enjoy performances from a massed youth choir, made up of 400 students from schools across the country, who will sing alongside The Amici Singers and The Ensemble of Friends. Two choirs will also be directed by celebrated composer and chair of the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition, Dr Douglas Coombes MBE.

Actor Robert Daws said: “It’s an honour to take part in such a joyous event and mark the start of Christmas by commemorating the incredible work of a charity that has helped so many of the UK’s most vulnerable children to turn their lives around.”

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said: “While Christmas is a time for celebration and generosity, it is also a time for reflection. This carol concert enables us to look back on the past 150 years, take stock of what we have achieved in supporting the UK’s most disadvantaged children and how we can do even more in the future.

“Just like our founder, we will always put faith in children who may not have had the best start in life.  We believe in children no matter their background or where they’ve come from.

“We will always be there to help the most disadvantaged, as we know incredible things happen when you believe in children.”

Javed Khan will round off the event with a speech to remember the charity’s founder and the huge contribution that staff, volunteers and children have made over the past 150 years.
