Nominations open today for BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2016
BBC Sport today begins its search for the Young Sports Personality of the Year 2016 as nominations open for the coveted award. In what has been a truly remarkable year of sport, this award recognises the best in young sporting talent in the UK. From a shortlist of nominees, a panel which includes well known sports stars will decide the winner.
That winner will then be announced at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016, which will come live from the Genting Arena, Birmingham on Sunday 18 December.
Last year’s winner was gymnast Ellie Downie, who made history when she became the first British female to win an individual all-around medal for Great Britain at the European Championships, by claiming a bronze at the age of just 15. The Nottingham youngster also helped secure Great Britain’s first ever team medal at a World Championships.
Previous recipients of the accolade include Claudia Fragapane, Tom Daley, Andy Murray, Ellie Simmonds and Theo Walcott. This year, BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2016 has once again joined forces with Blue Peter to offer one young viewer the chance to join the panel to decide this year’s shortlist. The lucky viewer will be selected from those who have applied for a Blue Peter Sport Badge.
Will Roberts, Assistant Director for Development, Youth Sport Trust said: “Every year we are overwhelmed at the achievements of our hugely talented young sportsmen and women. This year we have witnessed some outstanding sporting performances, so trying to shortlist them to 10 and choosing the ultimate winner will be no easy feat. I hope our nominees will inspire other young people to get involved in sport and create even more stars of the future.”
