FREE Road to Rio Fitness Challenge Gets Children Active Daily
The Golden Mile in partnership with Premier Sport have launched a FREE virtual Road to Rio Challenge that sees schools race from one continent to another, eventually arriving at the Rio Games this summer, with a chance to win some cool prizes along the way.
The Golden Mile is a national initiative designed to get primary school children aged 4-12 years old completing regularly physical activity and tackle the alarming rise in childhood obesity. As part of the Road to Rio challenge, children will collectively walk, jog or run across five chosen continents, eventually arriving in Rio...all within the safety of the school grounds. Along the way, children will learn about different athletes and sports from each continent.
Schools are competing to win a free sports day this summer, in a number of different sports, provided by the UK’s leading provider, Premier Sport. The Golden Mile is accompanied by an online portal which records children’s fitness activity as well as producing data graphs for every child, class and school. Finally, the online system includes a reward structure providing children with cool certificates when they reach different milestones across each continent.
Lucy Hatton, silver medallist at the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championship, commented: “2016 is such an exciting year with Brazil hosting the Olympic and Paralympic games. More great news is that Premier Sport have launched the Road to Rio Challenge with The Golden Mile giving children the chance to explore the world without even leaving their school! I can’t wait to see you arrive in Rio! Good luck!”
Lucy Hatton is a British track and field athlete competing in the hurdles. She was the silver medallist in the 60 metres hurdles at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2015, with a personal best of 7.90 seconds in that event which ranks her third on the British all-time lists. Lucy is in line to represent GB in the 100m hurdles in Rio this summer.
To give you an idea of the impact The Golden Mile is having in schools across the nation, in the last academic year alone, children completed 169,000 miles of exercise around their own Golden Mile tracks- that’s the equivalent to walking halfway to the moon!
Primary schools can register for FREE by visiting the website. Once registered, schools will receive a Road to Rio Competition e-pack containing cool posters with interactive content for pupils.
