Sainsbury’s Celebrates 11 Years of Active Kids with mammoth Equipment Giveaway to over 30,000 organisations

Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Simmonds OBE surprised children at Knypersley First School in Staffordshire when she took over playtime to personally deliver its Sainsbury’s Active Kids sports and cookery equipment, marking the scheme’s nationwide reach in 2015.  In total the scheme will donate a massive £11 million worth of equipment and experiences this year.

With help from six lucky pupils from Years three and four, Ellie delivered everything from footballs to tennis rackets and rolling pins, to highlight the importance of sport and nutrition in schools. Knypersley First School was selected from over 34,000 participating schools and clubs to receive the special playground delivery, and a cookery experience from Active Kids ambassador, Ellie in 2016.

Since 2005, Sainsbury’s Active Kids has donated over £160 million worth of equipment and experiences to UK schools and kids’ clubs and 2015 is no exception. 392 million Active Kids Vouchers were collected in-store this year generating much-needed sports and cooking equipment for schools across the UK.

Ellie Simmonds, Paralympic Champion and Active Kids ambassador, said: “It was fantastic to personally deliver the Active Kids equipment to Knypersley School; I wish there was the same passion for sport and healthy eating across the UK when I was younger.  My love of sport started at school and now I’m just months away from the Games in Rio, so there’s really no limit to where school sport can take you.”

Suzy Edwards, Active Kids Manager at Sainsbury’s, said: “Thousands of schools up and down the country are receiving their Sainsbury’s Active Kids equipment orders this term, allowing them to create really fun and engaging sports and nutrition lessons.  It’s very exciting to see parents and communities coming together to help children across the UK lead healthier lives.”

Ellie Simmonds is an ambassador for Sainsbury’s Active Kids, alongside fellow Team GB Paralympic hero Jonnie Peacock, Liverpool footballer Daniel Sturridge and the latest addition to the team, England Women’s footballer Lucy Bronze.

Since 2005 Sainsbury’s Active Kids has provided children with the opportunity to have a go at activities like cooking, martial arts and dance encouraging kids to lead healthier and more active lives from a young age.  Sainsbury’s is committed to making a real difference to the lives of young people by supporting children to eat well, move well and live well.
