EDUCATIONAL MUSIC VIDEO INSPIRES PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN TO LOVE WHERE THEY LIVE
After nine years of phenomenal success in secondary schools across the UK, the award winning[1] drama-based education programme, Bin it!, has been adapted to inform and inspire audiences of 7-11 year olds, encouraging them to care for their local area and love where they live.
This month the Bin it! project launches its first ever tailor-made teaching resource, designed especially to encourage primary children to dispose of litter responsibly by urging them to think about their own personal role in tackling the issue of litter.
Developed by The Wrigley Company, in partnership with specialist education consultancy Rapport Group, the Bin it! To The Beat music video is jam-packed full of important messages designed to encourage children to consider exactly what litter is and who is responsible for it. The video’s brightly coloured animations and catchy theme tune urge those watching to follow the characters’ example and show that they love where they live by doing their bit and binning it!
The initiative’s ultimate objective is to influence its young audiences’ attitudes towards littering from an early stage so that the valuable lessons they learn can be retained and acted upon over time and as they grow.
In addition to the video clip, which is publicly available at www.binitbeats.co.uk/primary/, the resource pack also provides teachers with three lesson plans – complete with teaching notes and accompanying activity sheets. The plans, which include a whole-school assembly presentation, are all carefully designed to complement schools curriculums in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England.
In a bid to promote the initiative and to encourage parents and teachers alike to make the most of the free online resource, The Wrigley Company will this month also launch a digital advertising campaign, through specialist education media, as well as sending out information leaflets about the programme to 10,000 of the UK’s largest primary schools.
Since it began, the Bin it! programme has visited over 350 schools in the UK. Bin it! has a proven record of success, with results showing that a significant proportion of pupils thought more about litter disposal having taken part in the session. The Wrigley Company is now very excited to be taking the adapted version of the programme online, with a view to helping teachers across the UK educate younger children about the responsible disposal of waste.
Alex West, Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs UK & Ireland, Wrigley said: “The Bin it! project has a long record of success and we are very excited that this year we have been able to extend the programme to include younger children through this new online resource. By inspiring them to love where they live, we can encourage our younger audiences to adopt good behavioural habits when it comes to the disposal of waste from an early age. We believe these lessons will stay with our audiences as they develop and grow – making this new initiative absolutely vital to the achievement of our ultimate goal which is to bring an end to the issue of litter for good. We encourage parents and teachers alike to get involved and visit www.binitbeats.co.uk/primary/.”
