Educating Yorkshire’s Mr Burton fronts new online interactive film to get more people into teaching

A new teacher recruitment campaign, ‘Your Future | Their future’, has been launched by the government as part of an ongoing drive to get more high-quality teachers into England’s classrooms.

Around 35,000 trainee teachers need to be recruited every year. To help with this, the National College for Teaching and Leadership runs an annual recruitment campaign which plays a key role in attracting high-quality new entrants to the profession.

Break-out star of C4’s Educating Yorkshire, Mr Burton, stole the hearts of the nation when he helped inspire student Musharaf ‘Mushy’ Asghar find his voice using a technique taken from the film The King’s Speech. It became one of the most celebrated TV moments of 2013.

As part of the new campaign Mr Burton features in an interactive new video explaining why those with the passion and potential to teach should consider a career in the profession. The film is available to view on YouTube, 4OD and Sky Go.

The new campaign includes recruitment events throughout the academic year, such as the upcoming flagship Train to Teach roadshow. Subject associations, like the Institute of Physics, universities and the government’s network of 600 teaching schools will have a presence at the events and will be on hand to offer advice and guidance to prospective trainees.

Matthew Burton, Assistant Headteacher, Thornhill Community Academy, and star of Educating Yorkshire:

"Teaching is more than a job.  It’s a heady cocktail of parent, social worker, sartorial advisor, counsellor, performer, peacemaker, enforcer, comforter, confidant, and actor. It’s an enormous responsibility, and it’s hugely challenging, and it’s never what prospective teachers think it will be. It’s so much more.

I wanted a career that challenged me, and one that made me feel like I deserved my weekend, going home knowing I’d made a difference. I also wanted a career with opportunities to develop my own skills and progress. Teaching is just that.

To be able to shape the next generation, and to gaze out upon a set of eager 11 year olds, thinking that future Prime Ministers, poet laureates, Hollywood A-listers or Olympic gold medallists might be in that group is a gift. To be given the opportunity to encourage that, to be even a tiny part of that journey, to be that teacher we all remember who had that lasting impact on us? Well, that’s a career."

The government is also offering financial incentives to attract more of the best graduates to train to teach priority subjects and support services for candidates to help them begin their new career. Bursaries and prestigious scholarships worth up to £25,000 tax free are being offered to top graduates who choose to get into teaching and help raise standards across England’s schools.

As well as a range of lucrative bursaries the Government is continuing to offer sought after teacher training scholarships for the most gifted maths, physics, chemistry and computing trainees, in partnership with highly respected professional bodies such as the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Those interested in becoming a teacher are encouraged to register with NCTL to receive a comprehensive programme of support and guidance.
