Into film and Pan Macmillan to Promote Reading and Writing this Summer
Encouraging young people to embrace the joys of reading this summer and develop their writing skills in a national film reviewing competition are key aims of a new teaching resource created by Into Film, an education charity supported by the BFI, and Pan Macmillan Publishers. ‘Summer Adventures - Script to Screen’ invites pupils to enjoy a film from a list of recommended adaptations then read at least one chapter from the book that inspired it.
Associated literacy and creative activities in the resource include reviewing the film for the chance to win a bundle of books, re-writing a section of a chapter as a screenplay, and designing a book jacket for the movie tie-in. To assist students in these activities the resource contains worksheets and tips, including links to interviews with leading film critic Mark Kermode as he explains the art of writing a successful film review, and Millions screenplay and novel writer Frank Cottrell Boyce talking about how he comes up with ideas for writing books and screenplays, and how the two differ. Every participant who sends in a review, book cover or screenplay will be a sent a 30% discount code for a select list of Pan Macmillan books. If all activities are completed, participants will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win £500 worth of Pan Macmillan books for their school, as well as a book bundle for themselves and a signed copy of Millions. The resource is free to download at: http://www.filmclub.org/assets/pdf/Summer-Adventures.pdf
The four recommended titles for primary pupils are: Born Free (1965, U) adapted from Born Free, The Full Story by Joy Adamson; The Princess Diaries (2001, U), adapted from Meg Cabot’s novel of the same name; Alice in Wonderland (2012, PG) adapted from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (2005, PG) adapted from the well-known book by Douglas Adams. Films are available free to order for all schools with an Into Film Club (www.filmclub.org) and sample chapters can be found on the Pan Macmillan website http://www.panmacmillan.com/ (see resource for links to specific book pages)
