HOPE RESCUE STORY WRITING COMPETITION

Could someone in your school be crowned the winner of the Hope Rescue story writing competition?
Hope Rescue are launching a special competition inviting all young people (up to 16) to write short stories (no more than 500 words) about a dog. The competition is completely free to enter and there are exciting prizes up for grabs, including the overall winner having their story read by top Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert.
Vanessa Waddon Founder of Hope said ‘Things have been a little bit sad for us all over the last 12 months. Here at Hope Rescue we have had to contend with Storm Dennis which closed our charity shop, and the impact the pandemic has had on both our operations and ability to raise much needed funds. We’ve worked hard to keep our doors open and our services have never been needed more, helping dogs like Alf, a German Shepherd who needed his painful eye removed. We really could do with a pick-me up and are hoping young people could help us?
We know it is tough for them right now too, like the rest of us they are spending more time at home and are missing out on seeing their friends. We wondered if we could help them to get creative, whilst helping to lift our spirits?
We are thrilled to have award winning author Lucy Dillon as our finalist judge, Lucy will be judging from the shortlisted stories read by members of the Hope Rescue team. We are so happy that both Rhod and Lucy have agreed to support this very special competition’.
Award winning novelist Lucy said ‘I’m really honoured to be involved with such an exciting and creative project, especially when the central topic is so close to my own heart! Hope Rescue is a fantastic organisation, working tirelessly to find happy ever afters for hundreds of dogs every year, and a quick look at their Facebook page proves that every dog has its own - sometimes humbling, sometimes uplifting, sometimes surprising - story to tell. With so much inspiration and imagination out there, I can’t wait to read the entries in February, even if picking a winner is going to be tough. My advice is to read your story out loud, try to use strong and simple words, and write something you would want to read yourself. And don’t be afraid to keep re-writing until it’s perfect.
