Wycombe Museum makes the most of its inspiring setting and diverse collection with a wide range of cross-curricular workshops for Foundation and Primary school teachers and home educators to choose from.
The museum recently underwent an extensive refurbishment and so there are a number of new benefits for schools including: accessible new galleries, extra toilets, lunch room, shop and café as well as new larger learning room, able to accommodate two classes at a time.
All taught sessions involve active engagement with real historic objects and teachers report that this acts as a powerful motivator in learning for children of all abilities. Many sessions involve role play and dressing up – such as learning to be an apprentice chair maker, doing the washing Victorian-style or experiencing what life was like on the front line in the museum’s very own WW1 reconstructed trench.
The sessions support the new curriculum and with the greater emphasis on local studies, many teachers find it helpful to have specialist staff, with knowledge of the history and geography of Wycombe and the Chilterns. Madalyn Baskerville, Museum Learning Manager says: ‘It is important for children to identify with their local area as it makes learning fun as well as real and relevant to them’.
In November, for Remembrance, there will be an opportunity to discover the significant contribution made by the Indian Army during WW1 with a special display on the Indian Army in WW1 with local Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire perspectives.
Also, Wycombe Museum’s popular Tiny Talk Time sessions are a great opportunity for 2-4 year olds and their parents to learn together. The sessions which run alternate Fridays in term-time include stories, crafts and trail activities around the museum.
