Summer activities on offer for families to get crafty with cardboard, and play a part in the creation of a new pop-up museum.
This summer families in Middlesbrough, and Redcar & Cleveland can take part in creative events exploring the local environment, and the role collective human activity can play in reducing the risk posed to species at risk of extinction locally.
The fun and crafty activities will focus on a number of at risk species, including those in our own region, such as hedgehogs, newts and insects. The work created during the sessions will go on to be included in The Pop-Up Cardboard Museum Of Natural History From The Future, which will be popping up at local venues later this year.
The workshops will take place at Orange Pip Market on Saturday 26th July, SIRF Stockton on Sunday 3rd August, The Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough on Friday 8th August, and then at Between The Tides Festival in Redcar on Sunday 24th August. The workshops are free, with no booking required - simply turn up, take part, and turn cardboard into bugs, insects and creepie-crawlies.
Kat Lynas, Illustrator and one of the lead artists on the project said “Cardboard creatures will be coming to life this summer! I’m so excited to be working with local communities and artists to create a fun menagerie of an installation.”
Encouraging families to come along and get involved, artist Hollie Notman added “I’ve got my glue gun ready to create cardboard creatures with the community. Let’s fire up the engine room of creativity!”
One million species are currently at risk of extinction globally, and these hands-on crafting workshops offer families of all ages the chance to engage with this serious issue in a fun and creative way. Those taking part will also get to create elements of the pop-up installation, which will be at various locations later this year, spreading the ecological message behind the project to an even wider community of people.
The Pop Up Cardboard Museum Of Natural History From The Future is funded by Borderlands Creative People and Places Programme, which aims to increase access to arts and culture in underserved areas of Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland.
