SLIDE – A CELEBRATION OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE BY YOUNG DANCERS FROM ACROSS THE NORTH EAST

SLIDE is an annual dance platform produced by TIN Arts and, as part of TIN’s 25th anniversary celebrations, will take place at Darlington Hippodrome in partnership with The D Project on Saturday 9 March.

Alongside youth dance groups from TIN Arts (Durham) and The D Project (Darlington), SLIDE will also welcome Fishburn Youth Dance and Drama.

SLIDE will feature over 100 young dancers performing over 15 new contemporary dance pieces that explore a range of themes and ideas from mini habitats to outer space. The groups will dance to a wide mix of music from classical through to 80s rave. Each individual dance piece in SLIDE has been created by the young dancers themselves in collaboration with their dance teachers.

The programme includes a special work entitled ‘Atem’ which translates as ‘breath’ from German. The piece has been created as part of a collaboration between young people from TIN Arts and Perform(d)ance who are based in Germany. The young dancers took part in a series of online collaboration workshops with both groups creating a dance piece with a shared title of ‘Atem’ with their own content drawn from the online sessions.

Martin Wilson, Director of TIN Arts said: “SLIDE is always a joyful event that enables all our young people to share their wonderful talent and creative ability. We are especially delighted this year to partner with The D Project and bring SLIDE to Darlington Hippodrome. This will be the largest venue many of our young people will have performed in and it promises to be a great night for all.”

Debbie Harbin from The D Project said: “The Darlington Hippodrome Youth Dance group has loved getting creative and playful with the themes we have chosen. All our pieces include a mix of learned choreography and also some youth authored work which has been devised through creative and improvisation tasks based around the themes. Our Contemporary Youth Dancers are looking forward to continuing to work on their piece and take it to Dance City Newcastle as part of the Regional U Dance Event.”

Councillor Libby McCollom said: “We are really fortunate here in the North East, and Darlington in particular, to have an abundance of talented young dancers being trained by professionals in their field. This fabulous opportunity to collaborate with various groups and perform on our own Darlington Hippodrome stage is one I that hope will leave lasting memories and provide a boost of self-confidence and encouragement to the young people involved.”
