Isaac Newton's tree to be part of Ancient Canopy to celebrate The Queen's Platinum Jubilee

The team at Woolsthorpe Manor, National Trust, are thrilled that Isaac Newton's tree has been chosen as one of 70 to be dedicated to The Queen in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen's Green Canopy recently announced the network of 70 Ancient Woodlands and 70 Ancient Trees across the United Kingdom which will form part of the Ancient Canopy to celebrate Her Majesty's 70 years of service.

The world-famous apple tree, at Newton's Lincolnshire childhood home, inspired him to question why apples always fall straight down to the ground. He came to the conclusion that there must be a power that draws them, thereby discovering gravity at Woolsthorpe Manor. Today the tree, a traditional variety called 'Flower of Kent', is pruned regularly to keep it healthy and it continues to grow and bear blossom and fruit.

Emma Michalak, Operations Manager at Woolsthorpe Manor, said: "We are very fortunate to look after not just a nationally significant tree, but one whose story echoes across the globe. Newton watched one apple fall at his childhood home in 1665/67 and the scientific world changed forever. We have the privilege to welcome thousands of visitors every year to tell his story."

The initiative was launched by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, who is Patron of The Queen's Green Canopy and President of the National Trust, under one of the Ancient Tree dedications – the old Sycamore located at Dumfries House in Scotland.

By sharing the stories behind the ancient woodlands and trees, as well as the incredible efforts that are made to protect them, The Queen's Green Canopy aims to raise awareness of these treasured habitats and the importance of conserving them for future generations.

The Manor House is accessed by guided tour only, which can be booked two weeks in advance through the website. The orchard can be visited without a booking and normal admission applies. For more information, please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/woolsthorpe-manor.
