ROYAL CELEBRATIONS AT THE HISTORIC RABY CASTLE

The majestic Raby Castle in County Durham is pulling out all the stops to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee this May half term.

Taking place in the castle’s scenic Deer Park from Saturday 28th May until Sunday 5th June, a new trail featuring a street party theme will be available for little explorers to enjoy as they search high and low for clues.

Visitors can also enjoy a picnic, which can be pre-ordered in advance, within the beautiful castle grounds. The picnic boxes include a delicious selection of sandwiches including coronation chicken, cucumber, sea salt and dill; local ham and pear chutney; and Teesdale egg mayonnaise and mustard cress.

Freshly baked fruit scones, preserve and Cornish clotted cream will also be included, as well as a strawberry tart, Battenberg cake, Victoria sponge and classic carrot cake.

Sophie Brown, events manager at Raby, said: “Raby Castle has a strong connection to Her Majesty the Queen who is an ancestress of Cecily Nevill, the Rose of Raby, through her grand-daughter – Elizabeth of York who was Queen of England from her marriage to King Henry VII. It feels very fitting to celebrate the Queen’s important milestone here at Raby.

“We've introduced the street party themed trail for families to enjoy, which will be included within the standard cost of admission, and small displays within the castle will look at how past jubilees and coronations have been marked at Raby.”

To round off a bumper day out, children can unleash their inner ‘Raby Rebel’ at the castle’s new adventure playground, The Plotters’ Forest, which is interwoven between the trees in Raby Castle’s Christmas tree planation.

The bespoke playground features an accessible boardwalk, as well as high-level walkways, tunnels, slide and climbing wall, along with several play towers, which echo some of Raby Castle’s architectural history, including the famous Nevill Gateway.

Prices for the Park & Plotters’ Forest cost: £8 for adults, £7.50 for children and £29 for a family ticket. A concession ticket is also available at £7.
