Foundation of Astrophysics

The Foundation Astrophysics programme provides people with the opportunity to study a number of topics in astronomy at foundation degree level. These courses require knowledge of basic science and algebra. The first ten-week module was on the physics of stars, from their formation to their demise. This second module explores our current understanding of galaxies, beginning with the structure and makeup of the Milky Way and the various stellar populations inside our galaxy. The nature of open clusters, globular clusters, and the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy are also covered. Lastly, the syllabus explores the classification, distances and observation of other galaxies and various types of active galactic nuclei as well as galaxy formation. Note: Students who are currently enrolled in the Foundation Astrophysics course will have priority over new students.

Dates: 30 November 2021 – 1 March 2022

Time: 18.30 – 21.00
