Stephen Fry is to record the winning entry in a children’s story writing competition, launched by Lichfield Festival

The actor, broadcaster and writer Stephen Fry is to record the winning entry in a children’s story writing competition, launched by Lichfield Festival as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations this year.

Staffordshire schoolchildren aged 7-11 are being invited to write an original short story on the theme of Green Journeys for the competition, which is sponsored by Equans.

The winning story will be read and recorded by Stephen Fry and released on the Festival’s social media channels for the Festival’s 40th anniversary in July.

Stephen Fry performed at the very first Lichfield Festival in 1982 with Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson in their Cambridge Footlights days.

Best known to children as narrator of the UK editions of the Harry Potter audiobooks and video games, Fry came to fame in the 1980s as one half of the comic duo Fry & Laurie and through TV series including Blackadder and Jeeves & Wooster.

The competition challenges children to create real or imaginary Green Journeys, past, present or future, or to think about how they might change and save the world, and is sponsored by EQUANS, who are transforming the Rugeley Power Station site into a mixed use, sustainable community including 2,300 homes.

“As a leader in low carbon solutions EQUANS is committed to Empowering Transitions. We are hugely excited by this competition and having Stephen Fry read the winning entry is a real privilege. The enthusiasm and creativity being generated by this work is a fantastic extension to our local and community engagement to jointly vision a greener, fairer and brighter future," said Chris Langdon, Development and Investment Director, EQUANS.

Closing date for entries is Friday 13 May. For competition terms and conditions visit: https://lichfieldfestival.org/news/lichfield-festival-green-journeys-competition/
