RACE HORSE TRAINER MICHAEL SCUDAMORE
SUPPORTS
MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY

Racehorse trainer Michael Scudamore, grandson of the Scudamore horse racing dynasty is the latest high profile star from the Equestrian world to be appointed as an ambassador to MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY.

Scudamore will help raise awareness and draw attention to the lifesaving work of the charity which receives no Government or National Lottery funding and relies solely on the generosity of the general public. Scudamore, who trained Mike Tindall’s Welsh National winning horse Monbeg Dude to victory and which romped into third place at the Grand National, joins a number of other high profile ambassadors from the Equestrian world to support the charity including Lee Pearson CBE, Carl Hester MBE and Nick Skelton MBE.

The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity has a long tradition of supporting the horseracing world and has become a familiar sight at the Cheltenham Festival and racecourse each year. For the last two years the Midlands Air Ambulance aircrew have been based on standby at the racecourse during Festival week. In 2013 professional jockey JT McNamara was airlifted by the charity following a serious fall from his horse and which has since left the 19-time champion jump jockey paralysed.

The charity also has a strong affinity with the wider equestrian community who are predominantly based in rural locations with riders out hacking and working horses on country lanes, farm and woodland. When a rider falls from a horse or there is a collision, the injuries are often very serious both for horse and rider and on occasion life threatening. Often these incidents can be in remote locations inaccessible by land ambulance or would take simply too long by land ambulance.

The service can fly to any location in the six counties and 90 per cent of the region can be reached within eight minutes flying time. This enables the aircrews to give a rapid response and administer lifesaving treatment on scene within the Golden Hour.

Michael Scudamore whose yard is based at Bromsash near Ross On Wye in Herefordshire said;
It is an honour and a great privilege to be able to support the valuable work of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity and to help raise awareness to the wider public and the horse racing community. The equestrian world in its many forms and disciplines are incredibly indebted to the work of the air ambulance, it’s pilots, paramedics and doctors who provide lifesaving emergency medical care.

He continued: “Over the years we have seen many serious injuries with riders and jockeys who have fallen from their horses and so it is comforting to know that we have such a wonderful emergency medical service provided by the Midlands Air Ambulance across Herefordshire and the five other counties. I fully support the amazing work of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.”

Michael Scudamore joins an ever-growing list of names from the worlds of sport, entertainment and the Equestrian world that have become honorary ambassadors and celebrity supporters to the valuable work of the charity. The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity now has over twenty ambassadors supporting its cause including former Top Gear TV presenter Richard Hammond and his wife Mindy Hammond, actor/writer John Challis (Only Fools & Horses) Harry Potter actor James Phelps  (Harry Potter) as well as former professional rugby players and Rugby World Cup winners Mike Tindall MBE, Neil Back MBE, Phil Vickery MBE and Neil Back MBE to mention just a few.

MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE responds to around 2,000 emergency incidents every year.  In the last 12 months alone, it has attended 650 road traffic accidents on some of the most congested motorway networks in the country, responded to 83 industrial accidents, 378 sporting injuries and falls, 105 equestrian accidents, completed 28 emergency hospital transfers and airlifted 158 children

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity CEO, Hanna Sebright, said,
“We are privileged to have the support of such an important name in horse racing. I am delighted that Michael Scudamore and the Scudamore family have been so kind in agreeing to help raise the awareness of the work of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. We have received incredible support from the equestrian community over the years and the support of Michael Scudamore and Michael Scudamore Racing will only serve to increase that awareness and support so that we can continue providing a vital lifesaving service.”

Each year the charity has to raise £6.5m to keep its three helicopters airborne 365 days per year. Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is one of the longest serving air ambulance charities in the UK. Since its inception in 1991 it has airlifted and helped save over 43,000 lives. The charity covers a population in excess of six million people across the counties of Worcestershire,  West Midlands, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire making it also one of the busiest in the UK.

The charity operates three state of the art Eurocopter EC135t2 air ambulance helicopters, which are based at RAF Cosford, near Shifnal Shropshire (covering Shropshire and the West Midlands), Tatenhill, near Burton-on-Trent Staffordshire (covering Staffordshire and the West Midlands), and Strensham Services on the M5 Worcestershire (covering Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.
