A 'May'velous half term at the National Coal Mining Museum

Get ready for an action-packed May half-term at the National Coal Mining Museum, where history and nature meet hands-on fun for the whole family!

The beach is back for half term week, so there will be classic seaside fun right in the heart of Yorkshire.

Visitors of all ages will have a thrilling day out and learn about the history of coal mining on their legendary Underground Tour, descending 140 meters below the surface travelling deep beneath the earth on a journey led by a former mine guide. People can also travel back in time through decades of coal mining history on their immersive Time Tunnel experience meeting fascinating characters on the way.

For those who want to get creative there are lots of fun workshops including drop-in nature-themed crafts, paper making and more!

Explore the stunning outside spaces by hopping on the Paddy Train and take a trip up to the Pony Discovery Centre to see Eric, Ernie, Bud and Finn.  Pick up a nature backpack filled with equipment to find all the wildlife that makes the museum their home on our nature trail.

Lynn Dunning, CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum for England said: “The museum is the perfect place for a pocket friendly day out.  It’s a place to have fun, make special memories but also learn about the important history of coal mining. Whether it’s taking an exciting journey underground or making sandcastle on the beach with an ice cream it’s a great way to spend the half term.”

The museum is open Wednesday to Monday and entry is free.
