Dr Fiona Miles appointed next Head of James Allen's Girls' School

James Allen’s Girls’ School is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Fiona Miles as its next Head, with her tenure set to begin in September 2027.

Dr Miles, who is currently Head of Loughborough High School, will succeed Mrs Alex Hutchinson, who has led the school with distinction since 2020.

She brings a wealth of experience in girls’ education, with a strong track record of academic leadership and values which closely align with the JAGS ethos. Her appointment marks the beginning of an exciting new era for JAGS as it continues to build on its unique history and unwavering commitment to excellence in girls' education.

Speaking about her appointment, Dr Miles said: “It is a great honour to be appointed as the next Head of JAGS and to follow Alex Hutchinson, who has been both a role model and an inspiration to me through our work together in the Girls’ Schools Association. I am excited to be joining a school with such a big heart, where a commitment to educational excellence is matched by a culture of kindness, inclusion and community.

“The greatest joy of my career has always been working with girls and witnessing the unique confidence that can flourish when they are encouraged to be ambitious, take risks and lead without limitation. Over the past seven years as Head of Loughborough High School, I have had the privilege of seeing a whole generation grow from Year 7 pupils into confident young women ready to take the next stage of their journey. I very much look forward to supporting the next generation of JAGS girls as they grow in confidence, character and purpose, and to getting to know the pupils, parents, staff, governors and alumnae as we work together to shape the school’s next chapter.”

Dr Jane Marshall, Chair of Governors, said: “Fiona is a highly accomplished and respected educational leader whose experience, vision and dedication to young people make her an exceptional appointment for JAGS. She impressed the Governing Body with her thoughtful and ambitious vision for the school, coupled with a deep belief in combining academic excellence and outstanding pastoral care.

“We are confident that Fiona's leadership will build on Alex’s tremendous achievements and all that is special about JAGS, inspiring pupils and staff alike, and ensuring that the school continues to provide an outstanding education for generations to come."

Dr Fiona Miles has been Head of Loughborough High School since 2019, leading the school through a period of significant success, including securing its position as the leading girls’ school in the East Midlands and achieving record A Level results in 2025. A graduate of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, she began her career teaching English before returning to university to study Medicine at King's College London. She returned to education and held a number of senior leadership roles at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls before becoming Head at Loughborough High School. Fiona is a passionate advocate for girls’ education and currently chairs the Girls’ Schools Association Midlands group of heads.
