Hitting the right note: finding a music teacher your child loves
Parents across the country are looking for a musical instrument teacher at this time of year – using Google or asking for recommendations, looking through directories or checking reviews.
Different music teachers have a variety of backgrounds, experience and skills, but with no official teaching registration or qualification required, how can you choose the right teacher? At Greenwich Music School, their top tip is to book a trial lesson and watch it. You know your child – you’ll know if they’re engaged and learning, and if they’re enjoying making music. Do they have a good rapport with the teacher? Do they want to do more?
Skills are built slowly so it can be difficult to see progress each week – but if the teacher can motivate your child to continue making music then every few months you’ll be able to see and hear a real difference in what your child can do. A great teacher will also provide a broad curriculum which includes musicianship, improvisation, composition and performance – they’ll give your child opportunities to be creative and to lead, as well as to work on technical skills.
A parent’s support is vital during the early stages of learning an instrument, so trust your child’s reaction and your own instincts.
