Oxfordshire Focus on Education

A choristership in New College and a musical education for life

Each September four or five seven-year-old boys start as choristers in New College Choir, and begin an extraordinary musical and educational journey.  Six years later they leave as expert musicians.  They sing in concerts across the world, record CDs, and take part in choral services in Oxford’s grandest medieval chapel.  Parents often ask how an ‘ordinary’ small boy is transformed into a musician of professional standard, while still being a ‘normal’ school boy!  The answer is in the New Colleges specialist music programme developed by the choir director, Robert Quinney, with choir and school staff.   Choristers learn exceptional musical skills but also the fun and challenges of being a team player, as well as commitment and focus which enhances every aspect of their lives.

For all information about being a chorister please see ‘Choristerships’ on www.newcollegechoir.com or contact the Chapel & Choir Administrator: nancy-jane.rucker@new.ox.ac.uk

2020 All - Through Model

With a history stretching back 87 years, Cranford House in Moulsford are renowned leaders  in independent education. The addition of their forthcoming Sixth Form, which will welcome its first intake in September 2020, will cement the school’s reputation as a superb all-through option.

The all-through model gives parents the chance to educate their children within the same setting from Nursery School right up to A-Levels and is vaunted by many as the ideal way to ensure children grow and learn in a consistent environment. This continuity can be key to ensuring that boys and girls are set the same high expectations throughout their whole school careers, without the peaks and troughs that school changes can bring.

At Cranford House, the all-through model also plays a vital part in creating the family feel for which the school is renowned, ensuring that children of all ages feel able to confidently explore, question and experiment with a real sense of security.

‘Un…deux…trois…allons-y!’ at Cokethorpe School

Children and staff at Cokethorpe Junior set off on their annual sponsored walk, in aid of local charity Special Effect. The theme this year was the Twin Town Challenge, to celebrate the link between Witney and its French twin, Le Touquet.

The sponsored walk is just one of the many fundraising events that takes place across the Junior School. Fundraising within school is an important part of learning, the children gain confidence, improve communication skills and learn about personal responsibility and the importance of contributing to their community.

Fundraising also continues in the Senior School with pupils holding bake sales, non-uniform days and even an annual 24-hour football match.

All their Early Years classrooms are located in the secure Lavender Courtyard and so Nursery children are familiar with all of the Early Years teachers.  it is like one big family nurtured by Mrs McAloon who oversees the transion process.

During the Summer Term the Nursery children have meals with the Reception teachers and throughout the year they visit the school library.  When they return as Reception children there is really no change... well, apart from having a brand new special uniform, more adventures, more sporting activities, more learning and even more fun!! CCCS Pupils Unearth Natural Treasures in the Woodland School

“At Christ Church Cathedral School, in Oxford, we complement and enrich the children’s learning through classes in our Woodland School. Set in the heart of Christ Church Meadow, this is the ideal place to use the relaxing effects of learning in nature to help children develop self-esteem, confidence, and independence. The boys in

Form 1 and Reception recently looked at different types of autumn leaves and made woodland power bracelets. It was all so much fun, especially with the help of our beloved School dogs, Thistle and Gordon, who were more than happy to help the boys dig around in the undergrowth.”
