OXFORD READING TREE CELEBRATES ITS 30TH BIRTHDAY
To celebrate Oxford Reading Tree’s 30th birthday, thousands of primary school-aged children around the world will be taking part in an array of activities throughout 2016, co-ordinated by Oxford University Press – from an international story-writing competition to global tea parties and other celebrations.
Launching today, more than 30,000 primary schools worldwide from Doncaster to Dubai and Aberdeen to Ankara will be sent details of the story-writing competition, which will be judged by Oxford Reading Tree author-illustrator team, Roderick Hunt and Alex Brychta. Thirty lucky winners will have their story and illustrations printed into a book for them to treasure forever. Two of the winners will be named ‘grand winners’ by the judges and will also have their book covers illustrated by Alex Brychta. Their books will be made available on the Oxford University Press website for millions to read.
The global tea parties or ‘Tree Parties’ will run throughout June 2016 and schools will be invited to share their events and birthday cakes on social media. Party packs will be available for teachers, bookshops, librarians and parents to join in the celebrations, with lots of Oxford Reading Tree themed decorations, classroom resources and party ideas.
An extra-special Tree Party will be held at the OUP office in Oxford in June with a celebrity guest, Roderick Hunt, Alex Brychta and local schoolchildren. Celebrations will continue via social media with fans of Oxford Reading Tree being encouraged to share their passion to get children reading and to join in the birthday celebrations using #ReadingTree30 or by visiting www.oxfordprimary.co.uk.
