£1m funding for Residential Outdoor Education Centres

The Education Authority has recently welcomed the announcement from the Education Minister, Mr Peter Weir, that funding of £1 million has been secured to provide much needed support to Outdoor Education Centres.

Outdoor Education Centres provide vital educational and social opportunities for children and young people throughout Northern Ireland, but have had to significantly reduce their services as a direct result of the restrictions imposed due to the ongoing pandemic.

Arlene Kee, Assistant Director for EA’s Youth Service, said: “We welcome this additional support acquired by the Minister for Education, and thank our Department colleagues who have listened closely to the needs of this sector, and the critical role outdoor learning and education has in developing our children and young people, both in school and through youth work.

“This funding will make a significant contribution to the support of these important services as they work through the significant impact of the pandemic. It should ensure that as restrictions are lifted, the widest range of service providers remain available for all children and young people to engage in the outdoor and residential experiences.”

The COVID-19 Residential Outdoor Education Centre Relief Fund will be administered by the Education Authority’s (EA) Youth Service and will be open for applications from 22 January 2021.
