WINNER OF BELFAST PRIMARY SCHOOL POETRY CONTEST ANNOUNCED
Molly from Seaview Primary School proved the pen is mightier than the sword as she fought off over a hundred entrants to win a new poetry competition unique to Belfast.
Molly's poem, titled 'Belfast: My Journey', spans the Balls by the Falls, the Titanic Quarter and Belfast Zoo, which she describes as smelling like monkey poo. The competition, organised by Nationwide Building Society in partnership with the Belfast Telegraph, asked primary school children in years 6 and 7 to pen a poem on what they love about the city.
Poet and judge, Laurie Bolger, who was particularly enthused by the imagination of the entrants, said: "It was such a pleasure to judge the competition and look over all the great entries. Belfast definitely has some budding young poets, and it was a tricky decision to select the winner. Molly summed up why she loved Belfast in an expressive and humorous way that caught my attention straight away. Well done Molly."
Nationwide's Area Manager, Jeff Watson and the Belfast Telegraph's Lee Henry joined Laurie on the judging panel. To celebrate her winning poem, they presented Molly with a framed print of her poem at the Nationwide branch in Donegall Place, where a copy will remain on display. She also enjoyed a poetry session with five of her friends, with her class teacher and parents in attendance.
Dane McCoy, Molly's class teacher at Seaview Primary School said: "I am so proud that Molly has won this competition. She was so keen to start scribbling down words and has always enjoyed English as a subject. The prize money to invest in technology will make a huge difference to the school, and will benefit Molly and the other pupils in their learning."
Nationwide launched the competition to celebrate the opening of its new branch at 61-63 Donegall Place. The Society, which has around 71,000 members in Belfast, has had a presence in the area since 1941, and has added a further two Nationwide NOW terminals from the previous Bedford Street branch offering.
