The museum is located in the historic buildings of the eighteenth century County Gaol of Down. As well as walking through the restored complex, complete with cells, visitors can learn more about 9,000 years of human history in County Down in the newly launched exhibitions 'Down Through Time'.

Established in 1986, Newry and Mourne Museum reflects the rich cultural heritage of the local area.
The museum's diverse collections currently include Newry's Cistercian foundations, Ulster's Gaelic Order and its relationship with the English Crown; the working life and folk traditions of rural and mountain areas; renowned local personalities and businesses; folklore, storytelling and music; and modern experiences of a Border area. All of the above are explored through a varied programme of exhibitions, educational events and activities.
