Facelift for Belfast school

An East Belfast primary school is undergoing a £3 million overhaul.

The construction project is underway at at Victoria Park Primary School which was formed in 2008 following the amalgamation of Mersey Street Primary School, Strand Primary School and Sydenham Infants’ School.  It has over 300 pupils.

Cutting the first sod at a special ceremony to celebrate the start of the new build recently, Education Minister John O'Dowd described it as a “momentous day” for the school.

“The start of construction work represents an investment of £3.59million by my Department in the future of this area and its community,” said Mr O'Dowd.

“The provision of this new accommodation will ensure Victoria Park is well equipped to deliver the curriculum to the existing pupils and future generations”.

The Department of Education has put significant focus on improving the schools' estate so that  children can learn in the best possible environment.

Since last year it has approved 40 new projects, representing a potential investment of up to £353million. £106million has also been allocated to the School Enhancement Project and £50million has gone into schools’ maintenance.

Mr O'Dowd said he would continue to press for additional funds to prioritise this important area of work.
