Wild about Wensum

Children’s TV personality to help raise awareness of getting children outdoors

Are you aware of the term Nature Deficit Disorder? It highlights the fact that sadly less and less children are enjoying the outdoors, which is leading to them becoming alienated from nature.

To address this issue and help the next generation to appreciate and connect with the power and beauty of nature and wildlife, an outdoor event, packed with fun activities has been arranged in May.

On Saturday 6 May, Pensthorpe Natural Park will be opening its doors for its annual event Wild About the Wensum, now in its eleventh year. The event is held on behalf of Pensthorpe Conservation Trust and will encourage people of all ages, particularly children, to enjoy the wonderful Wensum Valley and all it has to offer.

Each year there is a different theme, connected to the Wensum and its valley. To highlight the issue of children not spending enough time outdoors, this year’s theme is ‘Endangered Species – Children in the Countryside’.

As part of this event Pensthorpe is inviting local schools to take part in a competition, which will see them decorate life-size child silhouettes that will form an art installation trail around the park on the day - this will be a fun and inspiring representation of having children back outside.

The competition will be judged on the day by local celebrity, Jess French, who is a nature enthusiast and children’s TV personality.

The winners will then become Pensthorpe’s ‘Class of 2017’ and will be able to contribute to event ideas, provide feedback on park developments and be consulted on a regular basis to help Pensthorpe Natural Park grow into what the next generation want – a ‘money can’t buy’ opportunity.

The idea behind Wild About the Wensum is to raise money for the Pensthorpe Conservation Trust and organisers hope it will appeal to visitors who may have never been to the Park before.

There is a special reduced entry price of £3 per person, which includes entry to the park, and there will be stands from local wildlife and nature-based groups and charities connected to the valley.

There is an additional fee of £3 per person for entry into Hootz House, Pensthorpe’s indoor play area. Capacity is limited, so entry is on a first come first served basis.
