What is a Coronation?

A Coronation is a ceremony marking the formal investiture of a monarch with regal power.  It is centred around a solemn religious ceremony and has remained largely unchanged for over a thousand years.   For the last 900 years, the ceremony has taken place at Westminster Abbey and is conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

How you can get involved

The Coronation Ceremony will be shown on TV and online as will a special concert performed at Windsor Castle with iconic locations across the UK lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.

Coronation Big Lunches will be taking place from 6th to 8th May up and down the country where people are encouraged to get together with their neighbours, friends and local community to celebrate friendship food and fun. The website has lots of tips on how to organise your own as well as the opportunity to receive a downloadable pack with invitations, posters, recipes and activity ideas. Find out more at www.edenprojectcommunities.com/the-big-lunch

The dedicated Coronation website has lots of information about the event as well as a toolkit of templates and materials to help you with your own celebrations, including homemade bunting ideas, recipe cards, kids’ activity sheets, playlists and more.Learn more at www.coronation.gov.uk

On 8th May events will be taking place as part of The Big Help Out which is a national day of volunteering supported by national and local charities.  Visit the website from 20th March to find a list of ways that you can lend a hand in your neighbourhood.  Find out more at www.thebighelpout.org.uk
