Do these two things before going on your summer holidays

Going on staycation is exciting, especially after the past 16 months where we’ve not been able to venture out.

Travelling to a different town or city to create new memories with family and friends will be lovely, but make sure you take these two simple steps ahead of time to make sure nothing gets in the way of your time together.

Make sure you:

1. Pack a first aid kit

2. Take your prescription medication with you

Taking certain essential items in a first aid kit can maximise your time in the sun as you will avoid having to hunt down a local pharmacy and make sure you pack plenty of sun cream and bug spray, depending on where you’re going.

Our pharmacist at East Midlands Ambulance Service, Liz Miller, has 30 years of pharmaceutical experience has some extra advice.

Liz said: “As a pharmacist, I am committed to helping you support patients safely and effectively, utilise medicines in a way that minimises risk, improve patient outcomes and quality of life.”

Your first aid kit should include:

As well as making sure you have the waterproof plasters, bandages and dressings if you need to treat a minor injury on yourself or someone else, it’s important to minimise the risk of infection entering a small wound.

Ensuring you have clean hands and cleaning the wound thoroughly before you commence with first aid is really important.

Minor pain and discomfort can strike at any time, especially when we physically exert ourselves in ways we may not have done for a little while.

Don’t let headaches, hay fever or sprains get in the way of your enjoyment. Pack some pain relief and make sure you carefully read the dosage allowance on the back of all packaging before taking any.

If you’re already on holiday and need a pharmacy, the NHS website has a feature called Find a Pharmacy. In the search bar you put in the village, town, city or postcode you are in and then the search should bring up the pharmacies that are nearby.

If you arrive at your holiday destination and realise that you’ve forgotten one of your important prescriptions, use the NHS 111 online service for help and advice.

The website will ask you a few questions to determine if your contact is due to a medical emergency and will clearly list the criteria. To continue click ‘I have none of these’ which is a green rectangle button at the bottom of the page.

On the next page NHS 111 online will ask why you are using the service. Select ‘get an emergency supply of my prescribed medicine’. A pharmacist can decide to give you a limited amount of medicine until you can get a repeat prescription from your GP when you’re home.
