Author Hilary Robinson, and illustrator Martin Impey collaborated earlier in the year with the Seven Stories National Centre For Children’s Books (www.sevenstories.org.uk) and UK schools, inviting children to take part in a competition to write about a brave soldier, who took part in the First World War. The winners of which have received the unique opportunity of dedicating The Christmas Truce to their heroic soldier and school.
Seven Stories received entries from children throughout the UK and staff there had the difficult task of judging to choose two worthy winners. One of which was Lewie Higgs from The Cranbourne School, Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire. Lewie presented his entry as a scroll complete with “aged” tea-stained pages. In it he wrote how proud he was of his Great Great Grandfather, Thomas Higgs, who, as part of the Royal Army Medical Corp, treated injured soldiers on the frontline.
Martin Impey presented Lewie with his signed copy of The Christmas Truce in a special assembly.
