Primary six pupils from St Saviours Primary School and Riverside Primary School in Govan, Glasgow, have received training on how to deliver lessons to their fellow pupils on avoiding unmanageable debt.
The pupils have officially become DebtAware Money Mentors, teaching other children about having a sound attitude towards money when they grow up. Once the children have successfully taught the full programme they will be presented with certificates at a presentation assembly.
DebtAware is a programme designed by national debt charity Debt Advice Foundation, which teaches children how to establish money skills for life, before bad financial habits are formed.
The lessons and supporting materials have all been created by secondary school aged pupils, which are then taught to primary school children by selected fellow classmates known as Money Mentors.
The successful education programme has recently celebrated its third anniversary with over 9,000 children enrolled from 125 schools across Scotland and England.
DebtAware education manager Brian Souter said:
"Every day, millions of people struggle with debt, many of whom have never been taught how to manage money. Personal finances are not simple; being financially capable is one of the most important life skills young people can have in today’s complex and uncertain economic conditions.
“DebtAware believes that if children start learning the basics at an early age, they will be more confident about managing money as they grow up.”
