Children in Scotland Encouraged to Get Borrowing with Bookbug’s Library Challenge
Bookbug’s Library Challenge is re-launching with special events and author visits taking place in libraries across Scotland at the end of September in celebration of the re-launch.
Bookbug’s Library Challenge is a free and fun way to encourage children from birth to discover and enjoy their local library. There are a great range of children's books you can borrow for free.
The challenge is provided free of charge to all library services across Scotland. Each child registered at their local library will receive a collector’s card to gather stamps each time they borrow a book. When the card is full, the child will receive a beautiful illustrated certificate.
This year, the Library Challenge has been sponsored by 6 different children’s publishers, with each certificate featuring beautiful artwork from one of their titles; Nosy Crow, Bloomsbury, Oxford University Press, Little Tiger, MacMillan and Childs Play.
Catriona Wallace, Head of Early Years at Scottish Book Trust, said:
“We’ve decided to re-launch Bookbug’s Library Challenge as it’s the perfect incentive to get parents and carers borrowing books for their children. We’ve got some fantastic new resources for librarians on our website and beautiful new certificates for those taking part. We hope that Bookbug’s Library Challenge will inspire families to discover new stories and explore their libraries!”
Ten libraries in ten different local authorities across Scotland will host celebrations to mark the re-launch and have been allocated funding from Scottish Book Trust to hold author visits and celebratory Bookbug Sessions.
Jacqueline Haldane, Librarian from South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Trust, said:
“We’re delighted to be involved in the re-launch of Bookbug’s Library Challenge. Bookbug is hugely popular in South Lanarkshire with over 130 sessions a month delivered across all our libraries. The re-launch of the challenge will be an excellent opportunity for us to encourage all our Bookbug families to read together at home and enjoy choosing books.”
Parents and carers who wish to attend any of the launches are advised to get in touch with their local library for further information:
