Immerse yourself in World War One history

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is the largest surviving World War One aerodrome in the world – and a great family day out.
Once home to the brave Royal Flying Corps 37 Squadron, who defended the skies of Britain against Zeppelins and Gotha bombers back in 1916, the site is now an Accredited Museum waiting to be explored.

Expert tour guides show visitors around two large hangars with aircraft from the era, recounting tales that bring the war to life. Afterwards, explore the exhibition areas in original wartime buildings, discovering stories that are not only thrilling, but support Key Stage 2 learning topics in a variety of areas, not just History!

Children will love the vintage aircraft pedal planes and interactive cockpits, and there’s a nature trail where you might spot some of the animals, birds and insects that enjoy the peaceful site.

The Airmen’s Mess café, in the atmospheric original mess building, provides a great range of home-cooked food throughout the day.

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, in the countryside between Chelmsford and Maldon, is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10am to 4pm, until 6 December, with a programme of event days throughout the year - including the Stow Maries Air Show on Sunday 16 August. Standard admission: adults £12, concessions £9 and – new for 2026 – children 0-10 are free.
