Emily Brown and the Thing review

  Primary Times reader review quote

"A great show I will be recommending to my friends as a must see in this year’s fringe."

 Emily Brown and the Thing

Based on the Cressida Cowell book this play takes us to Emily Brown’s bedroom where she is trying to get to sleep with her cuddly rabbit Stanley but there is a noise that stops her.  The set is brilliantly designed and easily enables Emily to go from her bedroom to the forest, through the fridge to the snow and into the scary basement.  There was also a great use of puppets which added another facet to the show.  It was brilliantly cast, acted and sung as they took us on a journey that my children recognized about the difficulties of getting to sleep.

My little girl particularly liked the part where they were trying to find the lost cuddly which is reminiscent of so many bedtimes in our house.  There wasn’t much audience participation so my 4 year old got a little bit fidgety towards the end but my 6 year old was entranced by the whole thing.  This show also has enough to keep adults entertained as it was very well written with intelligent nuances.  I particularly liked the witch with the beard!

Overall a great show I will be recommending to my friends as a must see in this year’s fringe.
