The Pianist Review

Primary Times Reader Review Quote: 'very very funny'

The show is based around a pianist getting ready for his performance which on paper doesn’t sound like something that will keep anyone entertained for an hour, let alone 2 children.  This view is banished from the start when he struggles to even get through the curtain and you are all instantly drawn into his comically disasterous world.

The style starts with slapstick humour which amuses both adults and children but then he progresses onto truly acrobatic feats along with very creative uses of simple props that kept both my children, and me, rapt.  The pianist, brilliantly played by Thomas Monckton, doesn’t speak throughout the show but manages to convey a full range of emotions and stories with his versatile face and body and when he finally speaks at the end it seems almost surprising that he actually has a voice.

The show is advertised as U and although my 4 year old enjoyed it she did get fidgety towards the end.  My six year old loved the whole thing and kept laughing out loud, particularly at the physical comedy.  When asked for a quote he simply, and accurately, said ‘very very funny’.
