Annie Heads to Edinburgh as Claire Sweeney Takes on Her Dream Role
The curtain is rising on a musical theatre favourite this week as ANNIE arrives at the Edinburgh Playhouse from 15 to 20 September, with Claire Sweeney starring as the notorious Miss Hannigan.
A timeless family classic, Annie follows an optimistic young orphan whose life changes when she is invited to spend time with billionaire Oliver Warbucks. Featuring beloved songs including Tomorrow, It's the Hard Knock Life, Easy Street and I Don't Need Anything But You, the show remains one of the most enduring musicals ever written.
For Sweeney, the role is particularly special. The stage and television star, known for appearances in Coronation Street, Brookside and Benidorm, says Miss Hannigan is her dream role, one she has wanted to play since childhood.
In stark contrast to the harsh nature of the orphanage matron she plays on stage, Sweeney shares some heartfelt advice for youngsters looking to break into the theatre industry, "See as many shows as you can, keep watching and keep learning. Stay truthful to what you're doing and don't copy anyone. You don’t need to become what you think is ‘musical theatre’. Just be you."
Annie promises a feel-good night at the theatre for audiences of all ages and a chance to experience one of musical theatre's most cherished stories come to life.
