Meet the Founder: Lydia Scaltsas, LS Tuition

Meet the tutor helping children thrive with personalised, confidence-building learning.

What inspired you to set up your own private tuition service?
I’ve been a private tutor for five years, and after teacher training, I realised how much I wanted to make a real difference in children’s lives. I’ve seen how they thrive when supported as individuals – not just one of thirty. I founded LS Tuition to create something different: a space where children feel safe, heard, and excited to learn. We focus on the whole child – not just academics, but confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning. We call this ‘Learner Wellbeing’.

What makes your learning space different from traditional classroom environments?
Our space is designed from a child’s perspective. It’s calm, welcoming, and doesn’t feel like school, which can be transformative for those less confident. We host classes at our Edinburgh venue; we offer a virtual classroom with interactive resources. The space feels personal and supportive.

Which children benefit most from your tuition?
We support children from all backgrounds. Some have gaps in their learning; others need challenges; others are neurodivergent or struggle with anxiety. Some simply need a confidence boost to enjoy learning. Every child is different – personalised tuition works because of that.

Your approach is holistic and child-led. What does that look like in practice?
A bespoke programme for each child, which explores strengths as well as areas for growth. We focus on skills-based learning – no set curriculum. Lessons use stories, games, and hands-on activities to make learning memorable. This approach builds not only skills but relationships, communication, and confidence – because real learning happens when children feel safe, seen, and supported.

What feedback do you get from parents, and what progress do children make?
Parents often say their children start enjoying learning again – that they’re more engaged, confident, and happy. Many have made incredible progress: feeling successful at school, achieving grades, tackling big topics or exams they once found difficult. We’re proud to have a 100% exam success rate and 5-star reviews on Google and Trustpilot.

How do you rebuild confidence in children who’ve lost it at school?
We slow down and adjust. Everything starts with the relationship – that’s the foundation. Once children feel safe and valued, and we meet them where they are, rebuild comes naturally. Once that’s there, and they see problem-solving as a skill they can master, confidence soars. We help children believe in themselves again.

How do you work with families to support learning at home and school?
We keep parents closely involved, giving them regular updates and practical ideas for home learning. Our holistic approach helps reignite families’ curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning.

What advice would you give to a parent who’s worried their child isn’t thriving at school?
Trust your instincts. If your child looks anxious, disengaged, or upset in school settings, it’s worth exploring alternative environments and personalised approaches. It’s all about meeting children where they are – and showing them they can love learning.
