Schools win sports awards

A record number of Scottish schools have received a prestigious award from sportscotland including 39 from Edinburgh, 20 from Midlothian, 63 fromWest Lothian and eight from East Lothian.

The sportscotland School Sport Award is presented for innovation and achievement in delivering school sport and physical activity, with 747 schools across the country now with an award. It recognises schools that put young people at the forefront of decision making and planning of school sport and PE while increasing participation opportunities.

The number of gold schools across Scotland now stands at 399, an increase of 40.5% from last year’s total of 284. A further 274 schools achieved silver and 74 bronze.

In Edinburgh 19 schools are now in possession of a gold award including Cramond Primary School, Currie Primary School, Queensferry High School and St Francis RC Primary School. Pictured are Broomhouse Primary, who won an award last year.

A further 18 have received silver awards including Bonaly Primary School, Canal View Primary School, Castlebrae Community High School, Gorgie Mills (ASN) and Leith Academy, while Colinton Primary School and Ferryhill Primary School both received bronze.

In Midlothian, Bonnyrigg Primary, Roslin Primary and Tynewater Primary were the new gold winners this year, doubling the number of gold schools in the area to six. Cornbank St James Primary, King’s Park Primary and Lasswade High already held gold awards.

Bilston Primary, Burnbrae Primary, Dalkeith High, Glencorse Primary, Lawfield Primary, Mayfield Primary, Penicuik High, St David's High and St David’s RC Primary earned silver status while Gorebridge Primary, Newtongrange Primary, Paradykes Primary, Stobhill Primary and Strathesk Primary achieved bronze.

In West Lothian there are six new gold awards taking the total number of gold schools in the area to 22. The new gold-rated schools are Blackridge Primary, Eastertoun Primary, Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary, St Joseph’s RC Primary (Linlithgow), Stoneyburn Primary and Windyknowe Primary.

The number of West Lothian schools who achieved silver is 31 while 10 earned bronze.

In the East Lothian Council area Dunbar Grammar School, Dunbar Primary School, Elphinstone Primary School and Sandersons Wynd Primary School were awarded silver with Athelstaneford Primary School, Humbie Primary School, Saltoun Primary School and West Barns Primary School all bronze.
