The finale of intu Derby’s annual choir competition, took place on Thursday 8th December with Derby High School taking prime position at the top of the class.
Children from across Derbyshire sprinkled a little Christmas magic serenading shoppers at intu Derby as they performed in a series of competition heats, leaving 5 schools to battle it out in the Grand Finale.
Derby High School scooped the top £500 prize following their rendition of the Candle Song, Angels in the Snow and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, with runners up, Woodville School Federation, Park House Primary, St Albans Catholic Primary and Emmanuel School receiving £100 for making it through to the finale.
Judged by a handpicked panel of Christmas choir critics, both the performance heats and the finale were judged by representatives from Derbyshire Music Partnership, Castlefields Church and intu Derby.
The judging panel observed the children’s singing skills, musical interpretation and all round performance to select the all-important winner. Judges commented on the winning choirs’ well-rehearsed, beautifully tuned and superb performance with specific praise for their polished voices and careful attention to vowel sounds.
Carly Taylor, marketing manager at intu Derby comments: “Congratulations to our well-deserved winners, Derby High School. We loved the choirs’ crowd pleasing rendition of Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree!
“We’ve seen some phenomenal performances over the years and this year’s competition was no exception. The talent really blew us away and the effort all the choirs had put into their performances was second to none.
“We’d like to extend a big thank you to all the schools who took part in this year’s competition. We couldn’t have done it without you – you really were the stars of the show and got everybody tapping their toes and clicking their fingers!”
