The much-loved Baa-ttery Campaign has returned, raising awareness about the safe disposal of used batteries. Batteries thrown into household waste or recycling bins can be dangerous - if damaged, they may ignite or even explode, causing fires and serious safety risks. That’s why schools across Cumbria are once again being invited to take part in this fun and important recycling challenge.
This year, the Baa-ttery Recycling Competition has been expanded to include all schools in Cumbria with secondary schools joining primary/junior schools. To keep things fair, winners will be decided based on the number of batteries collected per child, giving every school - big or small - a chance to claim victory.
The competition runs from 4th November to 13th February, covering the busy festive period when battery use usually peaks. Children are encouraged to “herd” their used batteries into school collection points, helping protect our environment while boosting their school’s chances of winning.
There are twelve brilliant prizes up for grabs, generously donated by Cumberland and Westmorland & Furness Councils:
Four prizes of £300 in book tokens
Four prizes of £200 in book tokens
Four prizes of £100 in book tokens
Schools in both council areas will compete for the top three spots, with the prize deadline on 13th February. Last time we saved over 2 tonnes of batteries from the bins – can we save even more this time?
Let’s work together to keep Cumbria safe - and see which schools collect the most batteries!
