  2. Make the sponge batter:

    • In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and caster sugar together until pale and fluffy.
    • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    • Sift the self-raising flour and baking powder into the mixture, then gently fold it in until fully combined.
  3. Bake the cakes:

    • Divide the mixture evenly between the two prepared tins and smooth the tops.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
    • Let the cakes cool in their tins for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  4. Prepare the buttercream:

    • In a bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the icing sugar, beating well after each addition.
    • Stir in the vanilla extract and enough milk to reach a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  5. Assemble the cake:

    • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of buttercream on top.
    • Add the second cake layer on top and spread the remaining buttercream over the top and sides of the cake.
  6. Decorate:

    • Add sprinkles, sweets, or themed decorations to make the cake fun and festive for the birthday celebration.
